Claire
Claire is a 6 year old Jack Russell who was badly
bitten by a large dog. She suffered an injury called a flail chest
where a wound into the chest occurs under the skin. Surgery to close
the holes between the ribs is complicated because anesthesia and oxygen
must be balanced by the anesthetist while she breathes for Claire during
the open chest portion of the procedure.
Preoperatively bruises are evident.

The chest wound is explored.
The pink tissue in the center is the inflated lungs.

Dr. Nelson is the surgeon.
Kris Young R.V.T is the anesthetist.

Postoperatively Claire is set
up in an incubator with her IV fluids and pulse oximeter for monitoring
by Amy Davies R.V.T. and Kris.
