Basic Pet First Aid

No matter how careful we are as pet owners, sometimes an emergency situation happens. Here is a brief list of medications and supplies to have on hand that may be useful. As always, DO NOT give any medications without consulting your veterinarian. Many drugs have very different doses in humans than in dogs or cats. Also, medications such as Tylenol (Acetaminophen) and Advil (Ibuprofen) can actually be very harmful to your pet and should NEVER be administered.

  • Benadryl- useful for allergic reactions, bee stings (be sure to use Benadryl and not a combination medication)

  • Pepcid AC- used in digestive upsets

  • Immodium AD- used for dogs with mild cases of diarrhea

  • Baby Apirin- Discomfort, swelling (ONLY in dogs)

  • Bandage materials- (rolls of gauze, medical tape, scissors)

  • Antibiotic Ointment

  • Clean towels- To apply direct pressure in case of bleeding

  • Styptic powder- for toenails

  • Table salt- to induce vomiting

  • Hydrogen peroxide- to clean wounds and to induce vomiting

Please remember that ANY pet might attempt to bite if frightened or in severe pain. Always approach such an animal with extreme caution, even your own. Wrap small dogs or cats in a towel or blanket first. Larger dogs should be picked up by at least 2 people when possible. Remember in an emergency situation it just might help to be prepared.
